Your family home will be the most significant purchase you will make, and may last for generations to come. It makes sense, then, that you would turn to a specialist in residential design and construction for guidance.

Tara Designer Homes has more than 20 years' experience building residences on Chicago's North Shore, as well as in Arizona, Florida, and overseas, says Adel Tarakdjian, co-founder of Tara Designer Homes.

"Our reputation for surpassing the needs and requirements of our clients has been established through an almost fanatical attention to detail, and by dealing only with suppliers and craftsmen whose ethic matches our own."

"Tara Designer Homes also offers a range of guarantees and warranties including a lifetime structure, frame and foundation warranty, a budget analysis guarantee, and a timeline guarantee that distinguishes us from other residential design and construction firms," says Tarakdjian.

These pages feature a Tara Designer Homes project built from Nottingham handmade brick, and hand-carved limestone.

When you live in an area that experiences hot summers and freezing winters, you want the peace of mind that comes with knowing your home can withstand these extremes.

Since Chicago runs the gamut of temperature extremes, homeowners here need products guaranteed to cope with that fluctuation year after year. That's why Adel Tarakdjian chooses Mather & Sullivan for Tara Designer Homes' custom entry and interior doors, as well as wrought iron work.

Mather & Sullivan owner Richard Cohen recommends mahogany, cedar or oak for exterior doors, as these species are proven to withstand Chicago's weather conditions without warping or splitting, and without losing their natural beauty.

For the past eight years, Mather & Sullivan has been working with discriminating clients like Adel Tarakdjian, designing a range of signature products in a variety of wood species and finishes to suit even the most particular home buyers.

"Our products enjoy a singular position in the marketplace because of our dedication to clients, such as Tara Designer Homes, to provide a quality and highly personalized product," says Cohen.

Sometimes true beauty has an indefinable quality, and while you may be aware of it, you can't quite put your finger on it. Take a staircase for example. Individually, it can be considered a work of art, but when viewed in the context of a room, its intrinsic quality lifts the whole.

Adel Tarakdjian is acutely aware of the subtle, yet striking impression that a staircase can make. That's why he turns to Lake Shore Stair Company for the staircases in his Tara Designer Homes.

Lake Shore is a third generation company, with the fourth generation already strongly involved, says vice president Bill Wells.

"We all take great pride in providing stairs and railings of exacting design to our long-standing, faithful partners within the industry, and homeowners."

"We appreciate the confidence that Tara Designer Homes places in Lake Shore Stair to manufacture and install such a truly beautiful focal point," says Wells.

The staircase in the home featured on these pages features Brazilian cherry treads, newel posts and railing.

One of the more difficult questions facing homeowners is how to ensure security without sacrificing aesthetics. Adel Tarakdjian says this is particularly pertinent if you are building a style of home that calls for expansive use of glass.

To ensure the highest level of security one that's wholly integrated into a home's design, Tarakdjian says he can count on Classic Windows Inc owner, Tom Davis.

"For this Tara Designer Homes property we supplied a number of French doors with antique brass hardware in keeping with the classical look of the home," says Davis. "To address the issue of security, all of our doors come standard with multi-point latches. In addition to increased security, this system also improves energy efficiency."

The French doors in this Tara Designer Homes property include doors with arched transom windows and white-painted mullions, which match the decorative cornices in the home. The design of these doors enhances the grandeur and the sense of symmetry in the formal dining room. They also frame the picturesque view.

Presentation is key when it comes to making a good first impression. These are words to live by for Adel Tarakdjian, a man who knows the impact of beauty and aesthetics. To help give his Tara Designer Homes that initial power of the wow factor, he seeks out the talent and dedication of Wendy Rosecky of Burmeister Woodwork.

For 70 years, Burmeister has been crafting custom cabinetry that not only makes a strong first impression, but leaves a lasting one as well, says vice president Wendy Rosecky.

"Since 1937, Burmeister Woodwork has been providing quality design and service in custom cabinets, millwork, stairs, and window and door products to Wisconsin and Illinois builders, developers and homeowners," Rosecky says. "For this Tara Designer Homes property, we worked with Adel Tarakdjian to design and provide all cabinetry for the kitchen, butler's pantry, bar, bathrooms, and laundry."

Tarakdjian envisioned a kitchen that would be a pleasure to work in, as well as warm and inviting. Burmeister designer Connie Mitchell went with the company's Dutchmade cabinetry with a multi-step paint and glaze finish. This added depth to the color, creating a kitchen that is light and airy, yet still a comfortable living space.

The pronounced detailing on the Dutchmade cabinetry adds further visual interest, and is particularly well suited to kitchens where there is a large expanse of cabinetry.

A similar multi-step paint and glaze finish was given to the Decor cabinetry used in the master bathroom. As with the kitchen, the lightness of the cabinetry imparts a feeling of spaciousness and offsets the darker granite countertops.

Rosecky says Adel Tarakdjian also needed the remaining cabinetry throughout the home to convey an inviting warmth, while creating visual interest through the use of differing door styles and detailing, and colors.

"The remaining bathrooms were kept simple and functional and feature Timberlake cabinetry. Timberlake is a traditional panel cabinetry style that suits a variety of applications."

"For the bar area, Tarakdjian chose Decor cabinetry, but this time the cabinetry was given a rich cherry finish with a black glaze. The deep, rich color adds a level of refinement to the bar area," says Rosecky.

Few materials offer durability and covetous good looks like marble and granite. Long associated with quality residences, these natural materials impart an eminence that automatically lifts their surroundings. Tara Designer Homes co-founder Adel Tarakdjian appreciates this majesty and he knows that Manthy Hlepas of Stone City understands this as well.

For thousands of years, man has manipulated stone both architecturally or artistically, and it remains the material of choice for many residential and commercial applications, says Hlepas.

"For the Tara Designer Homes property, Verde Peacock granite, sourced from Brazil, was chosen for the kitchen countertops, while Emperador Dark marble, sourced from Spain, was chosen for the master bath. Both of these materials offer a solid background interspersed with radiant deposits of color throughout Adel Tarakdjian liked the way it picked up on the surrounding color scheme."

With more than 300 varieties of marble, granite, limestone, travertine, and slate products in stock, Tarakdjian knows he can depend on Stone City for wide selection as well as top quality.

Bringing order to our morning routine means we can at least start the day with some semblance of normalcy.

To create custom storage solutions that feel like islands of tranquility, Adel Tarakdjian enlisted the services of Closet Works in Elmhurst, Illinois. Kristina Ferrigan, director of sales and marketing for Closet Works, says the company's goal is to provide an assortment of custom storage solutions that allow people to create as harmonious a living environment as possible.

"Closet Works offers a lifetime guarantee on all products we manufacture and install, as well as an unequaled design guarantee that allows clients to make free-of-charge adjustments to shelving and hanging configurations for up to 90 days after installation," says Ferrigan.

This level of customer service is just one of the reasons why the company is partnered with specialist residential developers such as Tara Designer Homes.

The closet system featured here is based on the Windsor design, which was personalized to suit the client's needs, and the high ceiling.
