Forget the swept-up hotel vacation this holiday home has a contemporary glamour that would be right at home on 5th Avenue

Holidays are often a form of reward a time to unwind in idyllic surroundings, and to preferably do as little as possible.

This detached, three-storey house, in the Miami Crescent development in Hong Kong's New Territories, was designed to provide just such a retreat.

Interior designer Nathan Tsang says the interior, which was a show house for the developer, needed to reflect the prestigious nature of the location. It also needed to cater to the local demand for luxurious, yet contemporary interiors.

"Along with the glamorous fittings and designer furniture, it was important to convey a sense of fun and vitality," Tsang says. "This house was, after all, designed as a second home for a family of four."

A key theme linking all three levels of the house is the use of organic, curved shapes, which help to balance the home's hard edges and strong vertical lines. A multi-level ceiling in the main living area incorporates a distinctive circle pattern. Circles and elliptical shapes also appear in a custom area rug, and the dining table. In addition, the Italian sofas are curved, and a large, floating elliptical ceiling appears to hover above the table.

To add glamour to the area, Tsang provided a glittering crystal chandelier. A backlit alabaster bar is another fixture reminiscent of a five-star hotel.

Steel and glass furnishings enhance the contemporary flavour. So too does a wall of mirrored mosaic tiles.

"The mirrored tiles provide a more textural, linear look than we would have had with simple mirrors," says Tsang.

"They also distort the reflections, which has an interesting visual effect. In addition, the wall helps to make the entire space appear larger, and increases the lighting levels."

Two freestanding pedestals are also covered in mirrored tile mosaics.

"Despite the steel and glass, it was still important to ensure the interior was warm and welcoming," says Tsang. "For this reason, we added an American walnut wood veneer panel to the ceiling, and wrapped the veneer down the sides of the room. Other walls feature a warm-toned wallpaper with a hint of a sparkle."

Mixing the cool and warm material palettes is also in evidence on the other floors. The first-floor family room features warm-toned American walnut flooring, and an Italian designer chaise in a copper-coloured leather.

Bedrooms cater to individual family members an equestrian theme for the son, and a princess look for the daughter. The master suite is a parents' retreat, complete with private sitting room.
