Architects often specify detailing, which requires builders to draw on their full complement of skills. The design of the truss sections supporting the roof of the Waitakere Stadium is an example of just this situation.

Because the truss sections are bolted to concrete pillars with pre-cast connection points, there was no room for error, says Alan Smail, engineering manager for Service Engineers.

"To ensure the curved support beams were consistent with the design, we built a jig, or template to create 39 identical truss sections, he says.

The truss sections are made up of 12m lengths of painted tubular steel, and are approximately 40m long. If any single component had been out of line, it would have been an expensive error.

Nick Page, project manager for Canam Construction, says they subcontracted the truss construction to Service Engineers because of the company's history of innovation, dependability and easy working relationship.

"Ensuring the designer's vision was realised, required our team to form a close working relationship with Canam Construction," says Smail.
