Joinery supplied and installed by Miller Design is equal parts feature and function
Joinery can become an architectural feature in its own right through style and colour. This is especially true when construction techniques are an integral part of the design, as happened at Carlaw Park.
For both the hotel and commercial building, joinery reinforces the simple shapes of the structures. Miller Design manufactured and installed the joinery, and also designed five new proprietary aluminium extrusions to meet the needs of the project, says Kurt Van Niekerk.
"Miller Design took ownership of the construction of the facade on both buildings, and the associated works around these areas," he says.
Outriggers holding the canopy, cut from 16mm galvanised steel, also support the facade and louvres. The firm also designed, made and installed the soaring frameless atrium in the commercial building.
Joinery systems employed during construction include the Oakley 39mm Universal range, 100mm and modified 150mm Flushglaze, Shopfront and Atlantic sourced from Fletcher Aluminium. This complex is an example of Miller Design and Fletcher Aluminium coming together to design a project-specific solution, rather than just employing a standard product to fill a hole.
