As sustainable building comes to the fore, the industry is changing. Sourcing the most water- and energy-efficient fixtures for a project is the latest skill to be added to the toolbox.

Low-flow fixtures and tapware installed by JC McCall Plumbing Contractors contribute to the environmentally friendly construction of Carlaw Park. The company also installed the hot and cold water articulation and carried out all the PVC-pipe work in the two buildings on the complex.

The main challenge of the job, as with any project, was site co-ordination, says Gavin Jardine of JC McCall Plumbing, who worked on this project with business partners Peter Loughran and John McCall.

"Liaising with the project's subcontractors and the main contractor was critical to ensure all the deadlines were met and the project finished on budget," he says.

The dirtiest part of the job was installing the water pipes for the commercial building. This involved several weeks of work in the unlit crawl space underneath the cement slab for the ground floor. Plumbers needed to rig up their own lights and work hunched over in the cramped space.

JC McCall Plumbing Contractors worked closely with Chester's Plumbing and Bathroom Centre to source the fixtures for the project, Jardine says.
