The layout and design of Carlaw Park have created a village within the city
Carlaw Park offered a rare opportunity to create a new piece of the city. Integrating the new development into the urban landscape as a quality public space was the aim of design consultants Boffa Miskell.
Working as part of the project's master planning team, Boffa Miskell played a role in establishing the look of the project and ensuring it tied in with the existing cityscape, says director Rachel de Lambert.
"Right from the start it was a team approach with the architects and planners. We worked closely with the client, McDougall Reidy, who was very involved, very hands-on," de Lambert says.
The consultancy played its part in determining the location of the streets, plaza and square, ensuring the scale was right for the precinct. Boffa Miskell also designed the open spaces and the hard landscape as well as the planting. Because the site is set back from the main road, it was important to create a strong link into the development. This was achieved by providing a tree-lined avenue to bring people and vehicles into the precinct.
Establishing pedestrian links between Carlaw Park and the Auckland Domain was also an important part of the site master plan. These connections have been discovered by runners and students, de Lambert says.
Boffa Miskell is a multi-disciplinary consultancy, comprising urban designers, landscape architects, planners, ecologists, and cultural and sustainability advisors.
