The simplicity of the pendant lights illuminating the vast atrium of the Carlaw Park commercial building is deceptive. Much technical expertise went into creating these pieces, custom made by Arend Lighting.Because the lights can be seen from all angles of the four-level atrium, any joins or electrical work had to become part of the piece, says designer Danielle Morris."Their beauty is that the desired sculptural effect has been achieved, but more work went into the engineering and finer details than can be seen which is the perfect result," Morris says.Working from a concept sketch with architects Warren and Mahoney, Morris honed and executed the bold design. To achieve a Green Star rating for the building, the pendants had to be energy efficient and be made from materials that fit sustainability guidelines. UV polycarbonate was selected with an SDI (smoke developed index) of 1 and SFI (spread of flame index) of 0. Through engineering the materials and componentry, Arend Lighting ensured each of the large circular sections would distribute and support the weight of the finished work when it was hung in the 15m atrium.Almost 800 metres of red polyester-rayon ribbon were hand-wrapped around the sections, each one deliberately different. The beginning and ends of the each ribbon are hidden to create a continuous pattern."The angular lines of the wrapping complement the lines of the foyer, creating a softening of light play within a commercial space," Morris says.Lamp sections reach 1.8m in height and 2m in diameter. Because the pieces are so big, they were made off site. View of the 12m pendant lights by Arend Lighting inside the atrium of the main Carlaw Park building.
