If you like the clean lines and simplicityof a contemporary kitchen, but enjoy the cozy warmth of a traditional farmhouse look, a transitional style that blends the two may the answer.

The designers of this white-painted kitchen, Trisha Fotsch and Christine Moritz of Spaces and Views in Lincoln Park, took just such an approach.

"We wanted to appeal to people who like contemporary features and appliances, but are comfortable with a traditional feel," says Fotsch.

The designers specified Wood-Mode fine custom cabinetry with a matte finish and a granite top, which is typical of period kitchens. The cabinetry has simple recessed doors and is painted a crisp white, more in tune with modern kitchens.

"People are often surprised to find they like bright white cabinetry, especially when it is softened with a matte finish," she says.

The designers chose a period hammered apron sink, paired with a contemporary square sink shape and a pewter faucet.

Detailed moldings and a period door style for the cabinetry could be selected to accentuate the traditional feel, she says. Alternatively, a more modern note could be introduced, with sleek cabinetry hardware and simpler crown molding.

"This kitchen style and color can be applied equally well to other situations," she says.
