It's invariably the work that goes on behind the scenes that determines the success of a new appliance. The research and development may take years, but the results can change the way we work forever.

Fisher & Paykel's new DishDrawer is a prime example. The appliance that caught the imagination of homeowners around the world when it was first released, has been fine-tuned and updated to better reflect the way we work and play.

Laurence Mawhinney, Fisher & Paykel's vice-president of sales and marketing, says reliability and ease of use are the two most important features homeowners are looking for in a dishwasher.

Homeowner Louise Messer, who recently purchased her second set of DishDrawers, says that while aesthetics was important, ergonomics was also a key factor.

"The single DishDrawers are positioned just below the counter, so there is no need for me to bend to load and unload dishes," she says. "I also appreciate the fact that any spills or splashes that occur when loading are contained within the drawer. With a teenage family, having two separate DishDrawers means I never have dirty dishes on the countertop."

Louise Messer says many years of trouble-free operation with Fisher & Paykel DishDrawers in her previous kitchen were another reason for her repeat purchase.

For most households, two single DishDrawers, or a Double DishDrawer, provide the ideal capacity. As these dishwashers operate independently, you can stack dishes in one, while a load is being washed in the other. Having two DishDrawers also allows you to separate glasses and crockery from pots and pans for light and heavy-duty washes.

Each DishDrawer can accommodate seven place settings and has an economy mode.

Mawhinney says Fisher & Paykel's single DishDrawer has just been awarded Energy Star status, in line with the rating that already exists for the Double DishDrawer.

"Environmentally friendly appliance design is a major focus for our company," he says. "Our appliances not only provide energy savings, but are also designed to protect environmental resources."

Fisher & Paykel DishDrawers come with a two-year parts and labor warranty.
