Bringing light into an interior space can be a puzzle. One solution is to maximise the available light by using glass balustrades.

When Delegat's Wine Estate fitted out its corporate headquarters at Auckland's Viaduct Harbour, the company needed to brighten a low-light corridor. The resulting design features curved toughened glass manufactured by Glasshape.

Glasshape is an Auckland-based company that specialises in the shaping and curving of glass for both commercial and residential projects.

Glass balustrades enhance a long, curving staircase as well as surrounding a double-height void. A frameless mounting system gives the project architectural flair while adding to the sense of openness by allowing in more light, and creating a sense of freedom.

The Delegat's project demanded precision, as the design called for gently curved glass to be bolted onto stone treads cantilevered out from a wall, a process that leaves no room for error.

While subtle curves were needed for the staircase, the cladding around an elliptical void required much tighter curves. Glasshape rose to the challenge of fitting the toughened glass around the constantly changing radius of the oval.

The glass panels installed at Delegat's were manufactured from 15mm toughened glass. This ultra-tough glass is so clear it is virtually unnoticeable, while still providing safety and security. The 50mm standoff fittings give the balustrades mechanical sturdiness as well as creating visual interest.

Glasshape products can be used for bay and feature windows, cabinetry, barrel vault entrances, conservatories and partitioning. At its toughening furnace the largest in Australasia Glasshape has the technology to produce certified curved and toughened glass, in sizes of up to 390cm x 244cm. Almost any type and thickness of glass can be curved.
