Even the simplest design idea may require a multi-stage construction process to bring it to life. When that project involves a variety of structures boasting organic lines and a complex make-up, the job calls for an experienced, versatile constructor.CD Commercial Projects was engaged by Lend Lease to create the flowing amenities structures dotted along Darling Walk. Three complementary designs were required: male and female, accessible toilets with access to underground services; a retail structure ready for fit-out; and a stand-alone shade canopy. The multi-tiered designs required deft execution, says managing director Robert Orth."All three comprise a double-layer steel truss system anchored by a concrete ground slab the metal framework was too complex to be shop drawn and was built piece by piece in the steelyard. Cladding consists of an internal waterproof plywood barrier with two custom steel box gutters that run down both sides of the canopy. Outer cladding is a standard tongue-and-groove tallowwood floorboard, with black Sika sealing. Due to the curved shape, in some areas timbers were cut and re-milled on site planed down to tolerances as little as 6mm and scored at the back for flexibility. The boards were fixed to an intermediary batten frame to avoid compromising the primary membrane. Finally each board was sanded and oiled to maintain the wood and protect it from the elements.CD Commercial Projects provides development, project management, build and fit-out services for a broad variety of disciplines for the commercial, retail, medical and hospitality sectors.Together CD Construction and Building Services, CD Commercial Projects, and CD Residential Projects comprise the CD Construction Group.
