With its distinctive sail motif, Lumley Centre was conceived as a large-scale sculptural element for downtown Auckland
Structural steel in the Lumley tower project, reaches from the basement to the top of the roof masts. Steel specialists D&H Steel Construction undertook the work, and director Mike Sullivan explains aspects of the project.
"Central to the job was erecting 28 floors of service core floor and the lift shafts' structural steel," says Sullivan. "The most efficient method of steel erection is to undertake three floors at a time, but due to the construction method necessary for a service core shear wall, it was practical to erect only single floors at a time."
Car park ramps and a circular rotunda were also part of D&H Steel's brief, as were the roof structure, plant rooms and glazing support frames.
"The erection of the entire roof steelwork took eight weeks for an average crew of six men," says Sullivan. "Despite the substantial precision detailing, fabricating and erecting, no site modifications were necessary and proper alignment of all steelwork was achieved. Complex prior setting out and detailed shop drawings allowed this to happen."
