This heart-of-the-matter kitchen is open to the home's various indoor-outdoor spaces while tight internal work triangles aid ease of use

Designed by Hilit Einav, Design Your Space

Design statement

The house is located on a rectangular lot along a northwest to southeast axis. It has long and narrow proportions, with a width of approximately 10m.

The development brief was to create a wider and more open feel, with the garden visible from every point of the open-plan interior.

For the kitchen, the owners wanted an ergonomic and centralised design, with importance placed on convenience and ease of use.

The final design comprises a house with large glazed doors and windows facing east and south, with its two covered outdoor open-space areas connecting the interior and exterior.

The kitchen’s location made use of the western wall, which contained minimal west-facing openings.

Herb planters, fruits and the like can be placed into the built-in containers dividing the large island bench – separating the preparation area from the dining area.

A core aspect of the kitchen’s plan was to minimise the need for one’s movement when on task.

For example, a person’s workflow when washing, chopping and cooking vegetables is entirely along one linear benchtop space, with the waste bin directly beneath and readily accessible.

Additionally, when clearing dishes from the dishwasher, plates can be moved immediately into their drawer with a simple pivot, while glasses and cups can be speedily returned to their respective cabinets directly overhead.

Finally, when one arrives with groceries, the fridge is quickly accessible being adjacent to the island bench.

Overall, the kitchen feels simple to use, and – due to its openness and central location – is truly the hub of the house.
