Face of change
Curtain wall facades created the look of the Electrolux building and provided valuable energy-conscious advantages these were supplied and installed by Mico
In the hard-won battle for energy efficiency and a green build rating, the building's massive 5572m² curtain walling system played an essential part.
Micos Curtain Wall Division supplied and installed the Nova curtain wall system that gives the Electrolux building its distinctive, gleaming presence, says division manager Wayne Pateman.
"A major advantage of the Nova system is that it can integrate sunshades into the design with the knock-on effect of limited solar gain. This in turn allows for a scaling down of the air conditioning plant needed and the attendant saving on electricity costs."
The use of low-e glass on the curtain walls also minimises energy costs. Tinted, clear low-e glazing repels UV and infrared light that would otherwise overheat the office interiors, again reducing the load on air conditioning. In addition, this glass admits all natural light meaning while the offices are cooler, they are not darker.
"This glass means savings not only on air con running costs, but also allows for cutbacks in artificial light use," says Pateman. "This is especially the case in areas adjacent to the building's exterior walls."
The choice of glazing on the Nova system also contributes to the building's aesthetics. Two tones of low-e glass, green and blue, were used to create the look of the Electrolux building.
