A 14ft-long double vanity with hard-wearing counters offers plenty of storage in this master suite designed by KellyBaron Design. The ottoman has a classic look in a room that balances the modern and traditional.

With the remodel of a home built in the 1930s, you might think that the decor would remain true to that era. But bathrooms tended to be undervalued in those days, and the demands of modern family life can require a design shift.

This project, by designers Kelly Van Halen and Baron Rogers of KellyBaron, has doubled the size of the old bathroom, which had been tucked into an attic area with a sloping ceiling. To expand the room, the roof was dormered and space borrowed from above the garage.

Besides achieving a larger bathroom, the owners wanted to build on the elan of the home but add modern conveniences suited to life with young children, says Van Halen. Other needs included plenty of storage and vanity space for both parents.

With privacy protected by a nearby hedge, this shower stall was an appropriate place for a second oval window there is also one above the vanity. The glass stall provides no impediment to the eye, enhancing the feeling of space in an already generously sized room. The design is by KellyBaron Design.

"The resulting design offers the best of both worlds. On the contemporary front, there are durable engineered-stone countertops, a glass shower stall and a sculptural, freestanding tub.

"Original ceramic tile floors were replaced with hard-wearing, non-staining porcelain, but with a high luster that has the look of marble."

Baron Rogers says some traditional aspects include the chair rail seen in other rooms the cabinet design, and feature oval windows.

The freestanding Picasso tub in this remodeled bathroom was selected by one of the owners, and set under the window. The subway tile behind the vanity is repeated on this side of the room. The design is by KellyBaron Design.

"The window midway along the 14ft-long vanity was positioned to optimize light play and interior views, and to complement the exterior symmetry on the front facade of the residence. In fact, the owners liked this element so much that we repeated it in the shower stall."

Colors in the bathroom are understated, and draw the design together. Sea-green subway tiles in modern dimensions work with the pale blue walls and the sea-green striped drapes.

The vanity provides personal space and storage, and contrasts with the pale surfaces.
