Compact apartments provide the opportunity for designers to really test the limits of what is possible in a kitchen. Finding room to fit in appliances and storage, while still maintaining a feeling of spaciousness and functionality, can lead to some inventive solutions. With every inch of space needing to be accounted for in this 2.5m x 2.5m kitchen, designer Kira Gray of Fyfe Kitchens set about blending the design into the open-plan living space and creating a workable kitchen area that incorporated all of the client's needs. The list included a wall oven, refrigerator, underbench freezer, pantry, appliance station and dishwasher, cook top and rangehood, and as much storage space as possible. Being an open-plan living space, there was also a need for the kitchen to have a visual appeal," the designer says.Pantry doors are sliding, so as to not intrude into the kitchen. Similar doors are used on the drinks station, which is separate from the kitchen but built with the same materials to create an integrated look. All drawers have full-extension runners.
