Embracing the unusual
Unfazed by offbeat design briefs, Fineline created this multifunctional, social space
No longer the utilitarian spaces they used to be, the modern kitchen is often the scene of social gatherings, as well as dining and cooking.
Designed by Fineline Kitchens, this loft-style kitchen is situated above homeowner Kerry Bradburn's florist shop. Aside from being used on a day-to-day basis, the kitchen is often the setting for business occasions, so the design needed to be multifunctional. Bradburn says she knew this design brief was unusual, so was looking for a boutique company that could deal with it professionally.
"A high level of design flair was needed to create a custom space that fulfilled my requirements," she says.
The wall behind the island benchtop features custom-designed and printed wallpaper. It conceals a scullery where appliances and storage are hidden. This can be closed off when entertaining, or kept open for easy access when the owner is completing everyday tasks. The limestone island is extra long at five metres. It houses the sink, gas hob, dishwasher, storage cupboards and a pop-up power station that can be hidden when not in use.
