Deje vu
The Coro hotel was designed to capture the essence of the iconic Coronation Hotel that used to stand on this very site
Most architects will design a building to capture as much natural light as possible, but systems need to be in place to ensure light can be blocked if necessary. Operable external screens from Helioscreen were installed in The Coro so heat, glare and UV levels can be kept at an acceptable level.
Screens were custom made for The Coro by Helioscreen, and installed by Andaluz. Helioscreen's Nino Chiappetta says external rather than internal screens were specified, as they are more effective in reducing heat.
"If you were to put an external screen on a window, heat would be cut by 90%. An internal screen on the same window would only cut heat by 40%, but they are sometimes preferable for aesthetic reasons," he says.
High performance fabric called Sunscreen is used for screens, which is just as efficient as old-style canvas with the added bonus of being transparent so people can still see out. Ninety-five per cent of UV light is cut out, protecting furniture, floors and people from the sun's harsh rays.
