BEAUTY IS in the eye of the beholder, or so they say. That's why the right finish can speak volumes about how people perceive their surroundings. When you're presenting an arts facility such as the Millennium Arts precinct to a discerning audience, the challenge is to impress without imposing.

For painting contractor A F Sarri Painting, selected by Bovis Lend Lease to undertake the application of finishes to the internal and external areas of the library, Gallery of Modern Art, and the new entrance to the existing gallery, the job presented a number of challenges right from the start, says manager Frank Sarri.

"We had a fairly tight time frame in which to complete our contract, which required us to employ extra tradespeople and to carry out a lot of overtime. Also, the nature of the buildings meant there were lots of high void atrium areas, requiring large access equipment such as booms, scissors and scaffolding."

Another aspect of the development that pervaded every facet including the type of paints used was the stringent adherence to environmental guidelines laid down by the Queensland State Government and project developers Bovis Lend Lease.

"We used Taubmans Easycoat paint finishes with Microban a proven anti-bacterial protection technology that resists the growth of bacteria, mould, mildew and fungi on painted surfaces. Easycoat is low odour and low in volatile organic compounds, in accordance with green building guidelines, making it ideal for the State Library and art gallery buildings," he says.

Application was carried out in three stages, the two primary coats were applied using an airless spray technique, then a final backrolled coat was applied to achieve an even finish. This also provides a surface that allows for easier touching up of any damage.

"We knew A F Sarri had the capacity and resources to provide a quality job in adherence to the Class 5 level of finish required," says Bovis Lend Lease project manager Richard Horton.
