Sometimes a large budget isn't everything. Small but creative changes can have a profound effect on the appearance of a space, its impact on visitors, and the way it functions.

Animal Logic, the digital production company responsible for visual effects in movies such as Moulin Rouge and The Matrix, had substantially increased in size. With a larger staff and an international client base, the company therefore wanted to upgrade its identity and the standard of its offices.

Architect and interior design practice Collins Vergnaud was asked to look at two important areas: the company's front of house needed to reflect its creativity, while its compositing suites the areas where most work takes place needed to provide more comfort and convenience for clients and staff.

Designer Isabelle Vergnaud says the aim was to create an appropriate identity for Animal Logic.

"They are young, creative people and our design needed to reflect this, to show them as happening, imaginative people, not serious or conservative. The design also had to be sympathetic to the existing building's architecture," she says.

Previously, the reception area, a small desk buried at the far end of the main entry space, gave no sense of welcome.

"The new design makes clients feel more welcome, and creates a cool dynamism to reinforce the image the company wishes to portray," says the designer.

Features such as vibrant and reactive colours, furniture that looks and feels comfortable rather than corporate, and organic shapes help establish this energy.

Collins Vergnaud also refurbished the old, unappealing compositing suites. American clients may spend several days working on projects at Animal Logic's studios, often for many hours at a stretch. As a result these areas had to accommodate the latest technology and provide a comfortable environment to suit functions from sitting at computers to meeting, relaxing, eating and even sleeping.

"We achieved this by providing a selection of furnishings for both work and for comfort, including desks, chairs, more relaxing sofas and coffee tables.

"We also broke up the linearity of the spaces with curved walls, furniture in interesting shapes and a range of bright and unusual shades," says Vergnaud.
