The Hilton Melbourne South Wharf was also able to specify timber building materials to be supplied from a sustainable source.

Eco Timber Group won the contract to supply more than 10km of spotted gum for decking and timber that was specified for use throughout the hotel. Spotted gum timber is well suited to a project aiming for Green Star accreditation, as it is sustainably grown in Queensland.

Director Rupert Dowd says the main challenge of the contract was being able to source enough timber to meet the project's scale and time schedule. His company initially worked with the architects to ensure the most suitable timber was specified for the various parts of the project, and later liaised closely with the builders to maintain the required flow of the product.

One of the company's specialities wide floorboards was sourced and customised especially for this project.
