A warm ambiance and ease of use both factor into this family kitchen, backed up by generous pantry – a sterile look was definitely not on the menu

Designed by Abby Ley, Fowler Homes Christchurch North

From the kitchen designer:

Key requirements

A functional kitchen – allowing for efficient meal preparation; hassle-free cooking; and ease of use & easy cleaning for a family.

Style – wanted a modern, sophisticated & sleek look, and didn't want a neutral looking kitchen that could feel cold and sterile.

Sufficient storage – allowing for better organisation of kitchenware, appliances and pantry items; to reduce clutter and promote a tidy & efficient cooking environment

Challenge

We wanted a wall oven to help with having an efficient functional kitchen (to cut back on bending, kneeling or crouching to place food in the oven), however with limited wall space a fridge couldn't fit here either, so we decided to place it in the walk-in pantry – to keep the sleek wall oven and cabinet look.

Being just a three bedroom home we decided to sacrifice the space for a 4th bar stool and added an extra shelf and cupboards for storage on the end of the island bench.

Specific products

  • LED strip lighting is a must for aesthetic appeal and providing a decorative element – also a great choice when you want a soft lighting option when you don’t want the main lights on.
  • Splashback tiles – the Japanese influenced finger Kobe smoke mosaic tiles provide a touch of contemporary flair, sophistication and elegance to the kitchen; captivating a visual focal point and thereby enhancing the overall aesthetics of the space.
  • Macel 250mm pendant in matt black with smoke glass – with its sleek matte black finish and flawless spherical design, the smoke glass adds a touch of mystery and sophistication to the room
