Many grand buildings fall into disrepair over time, and the Crown Hotel in Sydney was no exception. Built in 1901 and aptly named for its crown-like upper parapet, the Crown became a haunt for cartels and gangs before being closed after an infamous gang battle in the late 1990s.The building now has a new life, having been purchased by Cafeideas to become a two-level showroom for cafe and restaurant furniture and equipment. Not surprisingly, the existing dark purple, white and orange facade has undergone a complete colour revamp. Architectural specifier Judith Briggs worked with a heritage palette, choosing colours reminiscent of cafe lattes and hot chocolate Resene Coral, Resene Dutch White and Resene Milk Chocolate. These shades also enhance the building's decorative features.Resene Lumbersider was used for the main facade. This is an Environmental Choice-approved paint based on a tough 100% acrylic resin, which ensures maximum durability in exposed areas. It imparts a natural low-sheen look that is fully washable, and adheres well to primed and natural substrates, timber, concrete and old paintwork.
