Colonial style
This traditional white kitchen has all the modern conveniences, including stainless steel appliances and soft-close drawers
When renovating a kitchen, the size and style of the home should be taken into consideration. A tiny kitchen will look out of place in a large home, as will an ultramodern kitchen in an older home.
The owners of this large, traditional home decided on an American Colonial style for their new kitchen. The old kitchen didn't suit the home, says designer Sandra Grummitt, from Sandra Grummitt Kitchens.
"The home is stately, with pretty, formal gardens. The old kitchen was large, but poorly planned, and didn't suit the style of the home."
In the new kitchen, white cabinetry is finished to look like furniture doors and drawers are framed with a raised centre panel, and the tops of the cabinets are finished with a colonial-style cornice.
Sandra Grummitt is now principaldesigner for a new company called Create Cabinetry, managed by designer Stephanie Weldon-Day. The company offers a complete design and installation service for kitchens, bathrooms and laundries.
"The most important factor in kitchen design is to ask owners how they actually use their kitchen," says Weldon-Day.
