Elevators at Jade contain the machinery within the lift shaft itself, a solution that frees up space within the main tower and penthouse

Working to a restricted footprint at Jade necessitated novel solutions for the lifts. Brisbane Elevators, commissioned to install twin lifts in the Jade tower, the two beach homes and the penthouse, recommended the Emerald, a European-made lift that does not require a machine room.

The main advantage of using this type of elevator, says Brisbane Elevator's director Bruce Fraser, is that the machinery and controls are at the base of the tower, within the footprint of the elevator shaft, rather than at the top of the building.

"There is no intrusion into the penthouse, which frees up living space and means the owners' privacy is not invaded. It also allows the lift to be serviced from the lowest part of the building," he says.

The penthouse has its own three-floor lift, also from the Emerald 300 series. The owner can use it to reach any of the three storeys, with the option of using one of the main elevators to reach the first or second storey.

"The design of the penthouse lift, which has a worldwide patent, means there is no lift pit. The lift sits directly above the kitchen of the apartment below, without intruding into the space," says Fraser.

The elevators, supplied by the Sematic Group-LM in Germany, received full system certification based on European TUV quality standards. They were installed according to the manufacturer's directions, and underwent stringent testing on site. Brisbane Elevators worked with the project architects to achieve the desired look for the cabin finishes, using materials such as bronzed metalwork on the ceiling. Materials were specified and installed to ensure no undue weight was placed on the elevator cars.

The elevator cars were manufactured by Verri Elevator Cars, another company in the Sematic Group- LM. Brisbane Elevators acts as agents for the full range of the Group's elevators, which are designed for buildings of up to 30 storeys.
