Handsome aesthetics, durable, weathertight construction and contemporary functionality are all absolute musts for any savvy homebuyer. One way to ensure peace of mind is to look at the individual products and skill sets involved.

This expansive indoor-outdoor house is by one of New Zealand's leading design-and-build companies, Stonewood Homes. The owners had selected the design from one of the company's wide range of plans. In fact, it was the second house created by Stonewood for the family, who had outgrown their previous residence, says new home consultant Karen Jackson.

"A combination of our design expertise, the wide choice of materials on offer and the skills of the workforce involved all contributed to the family choosing us again.

"For example, the house features the clean lines of Palliside Traditional weatherboards. We have been using this versatile product for many years now and while the shadowlines are ideal for traditional residences, the product also lends itself very well to contemporary designs, as seen in this home. From our perspective it is cost effective, both in terms of its exceptionally long life and because it is prefinished and never needs painting just a wash down every year or so keeps it looking immaculate and brand new."

Palliside Traditional weatherboard cladding is also suited to coastal environments or other areas of extreme climate, another positive for Stonewood Homes, a company which has franchises nationwide and builds homes for clients in all parts of the country.

"Other pluses are that Palliside is BRANZ approved and has a 25-year guarantee. In terms of construction, the 8m-long sections make for speedy, no-fuss installation and avoid the need for unsightly joins," Jackson says.

The spacious, light-filled interiors of the four-bedroom Stonewood Homes family home are as well thought out as the exterior.

Part of the open-plan family living area, the user-friendly kitchen is one of the stand-out features of the residence. It was created by kitchen designer Webco Joinery, a company with a long association with Stonewood Homes and itself in business for 25 years. Director Wayne Beattie says Webco most often creates modern family kitchens, and to the highest standard.

"We build in hard-wearing MDF which stands up well to family life. Our designs offer the functionality of German Blum fittings, with touches that make all the difference, such as self-closing drawer returns," says Beattie. "Stonewood requires the Master Builder's seal on all work, so this kitchen is guaranteed for seven years, and the finishes for longer."

"Design features such as a separate living area, bifold doors opening to sunny decks and accent wallpapers all contribute to a house that feels welcoming from the outset," says Jackson. "The fact that this family came back to build with Stonewood Homes again is a testament to all the parties and products involved."
