Think doctor's waiting room, and you may well conjure up an image of faded pastel furnishings and 10-year-old magazines or maybe a more modern but clinical environment. But there's no written law that says consulting rooms have to be this way. Sometimes a more adventurous approach can lead to a much more dynamic space that can be enjoyed by both staff and patients alike. For the new Ascot Park Orthopaedic Surgery in Auckland, the designers at Design Studio, a division of The Laminex Group, chose to enliven the reception area with vibrant red and grey furnishings.Studio manager Sandi O'Neill says the designers wanted to create something a little different. The built in cabinets feature Laminex low pressure laminate doors in the New Graphite. The Grass hardware includes full extension drawer runners. "We wanted to move away from a look that, historically, has been very clinical. To create a funky, bold interior, we chose to complement neutral grey tones with a vibrant red accent. The reversed pattern on the upholstered chairs provides an additional element of interest to the overall scheme."O'Neill says the space planning was a critical part of the Ascot Park project."The designer Suyin was faced with finding the optimum design solution for seven consultation rooms, and eight secretary stations, as well as the spacious client waiting area. All the design work was performed using 20-20 Design Technology Design Studio's preferred CAD software program. This allows us to present 3D colour render visuals to clients."
