Buildings designed for many hundreds of people require specialised products and services. The ability to custom-design such an integral part of this large centre its lifts and escalators is a major commercial advantage.

Schindler Lifts installed six escalators, two passenger lifts and two service lifts in the convention centre. Engineering manager Dave Knights says the project's most challenging aspect was the design and installation of a lift, which at 2.5m x 5.5m can accommodate a large 4WD vehicle.

The vehicle lift, although rated at 3600kg lifting capacity, was required to be able to hold a load of 7500kg when stationary with the doors open. This enables large loads to be carried into the lifts by fork lifts at floor level.

The specialist control system for this lift and the customised heavy-duty lift cars, were both designed and built in New Zealand, says Knights.
