A key part of a kitchen is what's immediately surrounding it – here, the designer simplified and lime washed the walls which dramatically contrast the minimalist black kitchen itself

Designed by Debra Brockman Interior Architecture + Design

From the designer:

This sculptural straw-bale house had a very dark and dated interior.

The homeowners' brief was for a minimalist, black kitchen that would contrast with its organic and textural surroundings.

The existing fireplace, laundry and bathroom – being directly linked to this space – needed to be updated as well, as did the existing walls and ceilings which didn’t reflect the new juxtaposition of organic versus sharp that was to come.

Overwhelmed by an excessive variety of finishes that no longer complemented the warm, natural qualities of the straw-bale construction, we simplified the space by hand rendering the limestone wall which was the central structural spine, and removed the stone cladding above it – allowing for a consistent finish throughout.

With a new coat of lime plaster, and painting the old pine ceiling white, the entire space was resurrected.

Within this environment, we created a refined and elegant kitchen which offers a striking contrast with the organic shapes of the hand-built straw-bale walls.

The dramatic height of the cathedral ceiling was also crucial to creating the feeling of space and light for the sophisticated new kitchen design.

The project faced an unexpected challenge when part of the overhead straw-bale wall into the original pantry collapsed, disrupting the original design concept.

However the redesign of this element ultimately allowed for a more open and functional layout.

The overall design creates a peaceful, harmonious environment where modern design meets nature, offering a perfect blend of minimalist luxury and organic charm.
