Virtually any size or type of glass can be curved and toughened, then used to create a wide variety of distinctive architectural features
Curves have long been used by architects tosoften and enliven buildings and curved glass is being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects.
Specialist glass manufacturer Glasshape produces curved and toughened glass that can be used for bay and feature windows, frameless balustrades and barrel vault entrances, as well as conservatories and partitioning. Curved glass provides a point of difference and allows for wide, uninterrupted views.
Glass plates, in thicknesses from 4mm to 19mm, are curved and toughened in the company's New Zealand plant the largest in Australasia to AS/NZ 2208 safety standards. Having a local plant helps the company to reduce lead times and costs.
Glasshape's latest product, pictured below right, is a curved and toughened glass entrance that provides protection from wind and rain. The curve of the glass draws the eye to the entrance, while the stainless steel handrail acts as a vision strip.
Curved glass can be laminated for use as grade-A certified safety glass, or double glazed, to conform with new H1 legislation. Glasshape also supplies a range of specialist intruder-resistant and other high-security types of laminated glass.
