The unusual curved shape of the Nautilus was determined by the structural steel. This was fabricated and erected by Auckland Steel, a company that specialises in supplying structural steel for industrial and commercial applications.

Steel draughtsman Stuart Airey says the reasonably complex nature of the design entailed very precise measuring and fabrication.

"There were also numerous engineering challenges to overcome," he says.
