Award-winning new home by Fowler Homes Taranaki with sheltered outdoor living area
New family home by Fowler Homes features dark-stained cedar and white plaster, spacious interior with two kitchen islands, indoor-outdoor flow
A hundred years ago, homes were built to face the street, with scant regard to sun and prevailing winds.
Today, these elements are key considerations, but this doesn't mean street appeal is compromised, as this award-winning home demonstrates.
Designed and built by Fowler Homes Taranaki, the 248m² home makes a dramatic first impression. Dark-stained cedar weatherboards contrast white plaster and polished concrete block, providing visual depth and texture.
The front of the house faces north, and has large windows to maximise the light and the warmth of the sun in winter. But because the wind is from this direction, the living areas open up to the south and west, and the house forms a U shape around an outdoor living area.
Other key features include large skylights above the open-plan kitchen, and above a second covered deck off the dining area. And there is a vertical slat wall separating the lounge and family living area.
Although the house was built to a standard plan, Fowler Homes says there were many adaptations to suit the owners' requirements, including a massive storage room.
The home won Gold and Local Craftsmanship Awards in the 2014 Master Builder House of the Year Awards.
