Art Deco renovation by designer Mal Corboy
Retro kitchen with Smeg appliances
The kitchen is getting bigger, says one of our leading designers. Island benches have become the show pony of the entire home, and angular profiles are making way for fluid, organic curves.
Mal Corboy, multi award-winning kitchen designer and former Australian Kitchen Designer of the Year, also says the relaxed lifestyle of Australians means the kitchen plays a heightened social role in the heart of the home.
For this Art Deco home, Corboy took the retro curves of the iconic Smeg FAB refrigerator as inspiration for a clean, crisp kitchen in white with pops of colour in aqua and pink. The most striking feature is the sweeping curves of the bulkheads in cupboards, cabinets and island bench.
"Smeg's individual approach to kitchen appliances means you can achieve a more customised look," says Corboy. "This may be achieved through the retro curves of the FAB range; the contemporary, colour block approach of the Marc Newson collection; the elegant, enduring style of Guido Canali's Classic range; or the almost futuristic look of Linear in stopsilver glass and stainless steel."
For this kitchen Corboy teamed the 50s style Smeg FAB32 two door refrigerator/freezer in Panna with a matching BLV1 retro-design dishwasher, four-zone SIHP264S induction cooktop and Classic stainless steel SA37X microwave oven.
