Art Deco delight kitchen by Nicola Cumming
Nicola Cumming Design black and butterscotch kitchen
There are many ways to make a kitchen a conversation piece, but few would be as distinctive as this project.
Kitchen designer Nicola Cumming of Nicola Cumming Design says the owner loves the Art Deco look and wanted her kitchen to reflect this.
"Colour needed to play a big part, and the kitchen had to be of the era. It also had to be warm and inviting," she says.
Cumming's solution was to introduce butterscotch lacquered cabinets with high-gloss black lacquer detailing to make a strong visual statement. The curved end of the peninsula provides the piéce de resistance a backlit image of the dome in an historic Art Deco building in Napier.
Other key features include a black sink, tap and toekicks, two radial textured-glass splashbacks, a black-and-caramel tiled upstand, curved handles and two flying shelving units with radius edges.
"The layout reflects the way the two owners like to work together in the kitchen," Cumming says. "There are also hidden storage accessories that pull out for quick and easy access to all items."
Cumming has been designing kitchens and bathrooms for 30 years and says every project reflects her clients' aspirations.
