AO Architecture wins 2020 TIDA New Zealand Designer Renovation of the Year
Congratulations to AO Architecture, winner of TIDA New Zealand Designer Renovation of the Year. Find out more about an impressive renovation in the face of adversity
The owners of this turn-of-the-century Christchurch manor had just completed renovating the house when the September 2011 earthquake struck.
Masonry chimneys collapsed and roof tiles were dislodged during the quake, while the interior was left with extensive structural and cosmetic damage.

In the face of this adversity, the owners embarked on an extremely ambitious, larger scale restoration and renovation of the manor.
The building was stripped back to the studs, with most floors removed, and was then structurally strengthened to 100% of the Building Code.
Adjustments were made to the interior layout and, while some key rooms were reinstituted with authentic period details, others such as the kitchens and bathrooms were given a more modern aesthetic.
The judges felt that the owners and the designer have shown exceptional dedication, skill and perseverance in resurrecting this historic property from such a disastrous situation.
