No matter how focused you are in the kitchen, it's great to be able to look up and enjoy an attractive outlook.

Redesigning this kitchen to maximise a great sea view was one of the priorities for the remodelling project designed by the owners and architect Ria Pepper. The other key requirements were a more up-to-date look and improved functionality the owners wanted more than one person at a time to be able to work in the kitchen at the same time.

"Replacing the original peninsula with an island meant we could have two entrances to the kitchen, with circulation around either side," says one of the owners. "We also ensured the space is very generous. For example, we can have the dishwasher door on the island fully open, and the pantry doors on the perimeter cabinets open, and still have room to move past. And, of course, we can enjoy the view while standing at the island."

In keeping with the mainly monochromatic colour palette of the house, the kitchen is a mix of sleek, white-lacquered cabinets and dark-stained American oak wood veneer. When viewed from the adjacent family area, it is the wood cabinets that are the focus. The use of an integrated ventilation unit also helps minimise the visual impact of the more functional kitchen elements.
