The long narrow site is at right angles to the beach and the brief was for three townhouses each with as wide a beach view as possible and with an active aspect to the street.

The materials and spaces had to have an upmarket look and feel. Outdoor spaces sheltered from the wind in all seasons were also required.

Large living spaces give a sense of opulence, and connect to the beach environment. At the same time they can close off to shelter the spaces on stormy winter nights.

Will Tatton Architecture responded to this contrasting brief with multi-layered wall screens enclosing the courtyards giving a tropical feel.

The outer screens form a second skin outside the decks and operate at the push of a button. Louvres on the screens can be feathered for rain protection and the roof also opens, admitting light through pivoting louvres. The outer layer reduces solar gain and heat build-up on interiors.

Opening the inner tier of tall glass doors with the outer layer closed transforms the mid level into one large, voluminous space.

The client's request for a bold design with strong forms was answered with the use of copper contrasted with panels of dark Indian stone.

Ground levels offer a discreet street entry, a grand private entrance and guest rooms. Living spaces occupy the mid level and the master suite is on the top floor.
