ADNZ/RESENE 2010 NATIONAL DESIGN AWARDS
Resene Supreme Award and Residential New Single Dwelling (up to 250m²) Award winnerBryce Ardern, Ardern Unique Design & Build, Waiheke Island Lite-House, Waiheke Island, Auckland
As interest in environmentally sustainable design (ESD) has increased, Arden UDB has reviewed its design approach. One of the new building types reflecting the swing towards sustainability in urban design has been the mixed-use development, combining residential and light commercial/office use in urban nodes or centres a component of many district plans today.
In keeping with this, Lite-House contains three office spaces and a high-end one bedroom apartment. Arden UDB occupies one of the offices, the other is to be let to a related business with the third downstairs office to be used for promotional events, ESD seminars or meetings of sponsors.
Arden UDB has the support of Right House, a company already actively involved with promoting Transition Waiheke, a new member of Transition Towns. Together, these companies aim to lead the way in ESD and promote these building technologies in a proposed Waiheke Ideas and Exhibition Centre. Lite-House has been open to the public, builders and architects to allow them to see the best in design, materials and building technologies.
Lite-House incorporates green initiatives promoted by the New Zealand Green Building Council, Forest Stewardship Council, Home Energy Rating Scheme, Greenbuild and CarboNZero.
