A place for everything

An extensive remodeling plan meant there was the opportunity to create an individualized floor plan allowing for the integration of several areas

There's an old adage that a change is as good as a vacation now while that may not be strictly true, there is something to be said for the excitement that is generated by a good old-fashioned remodel. For the owners of the home featured on these pages, the plan was to create a family suite out of an existing kitchen, sun porch and den.

That project presented the owners with an opportunity to change other areas of the home the laundry, and mudroom that they felt needed to be addressed, says Dream Kitchens of Georgia design sales consultant Ernie Lehmann.

"The owners felt that by completing the entire remodel as one project, they were able to create a cohesive design for each of the areas."

Several of the design elements from the family suite have been carried over to the laundry and mudroom, including the porcelain floor tiles and a complementary color scheme.

"The family accesses the home more often than not via the mudroom, which adjoins the family suite. While this area is informal, the owners wanted a link to the rest of the space to create as seamless a transition as possible," says Lehmann.

There is also a powder room in this area, eliminating the need for people to enter the main part of the house while outside gardening or entertaining around the pool.

As the main intention of the remodel was to accommodate the extended family, storage space was requisite in the design of the areas, with both spaces offering abundant storage options.

Custom deep drawers, full-height pantry-style cupboards and overhead cabinets are a feature of both areas. The laundry also includes a built-in ironing board, hanging rod, and basket storage.

As with the design, the washer and dryer were expressly chosen for their extra-large capacities.
