A higher level
This custom staircase appears to hang in space like a floating sculpture creating a practical design feature for the building it services
As a stand-out sculptural element, a custom staircase can add a sense of grandeur to the environment it inhabits, and provide a focal point that can be admired both from a distance and every time someone moves between floors.
Arden Architectural Staircases specialises in the design, manufacture, installation and certification of contemporary staircases and balustrades, says sales and marketing director Scott Nicholas.
"These are usually constructed for larger commercial properties, large housing projects and prestige homes," says Nicholas. "For example, this timber, glass, and stainless steel staircase, connecting two floors in the offices of AbiGroup, was engineered and installed by us from a design by architects Cox Rayner."
"Preliminary architectural drawings showed the intent, but difficulties emerged with respect to engineering and integration with other building features."
The range of possibilities, trades and technical services that Arden could offer opened the design parameters for the architects. Close collaboration between architects and Arden allowed for a speedy resolution to the final design process.
"A stair model was developed that overcame the engineering problems and achieved the hanging-in-space look required," says Nicholas. "Quality control was achieved via meticulously prepared architectural and workshop drawings. These digitised the complex construction components from the inner structural steel frame and timber joinery, to the stainless steel stanchions and hand rail system, computer-laser cut steel components, the CNC cut joinery components, and the toughened glass balustrade panels.
The high-tech computer-rendition was then turned into a reality by Arden Architectural Staircases' carpenters, joiners, mild-steel metal workers, glaziers, 2-pak polyurethane spray painters, stainless steel fabricators and on-site installers.
"All of these trades are employed in-house to provide the skills, materials and components necessary to seamlessly bring the whole project together from original concepts through to final project certification," he says.
