8 great uses of louvres for outdoor living

The versatility and functionality of louvres has come a long way – check out these architectural applications that take the indoors outside

1. Darren ONeil, ONeil Architecture

Exceptional indoor-outdoor flow was an aim for this home. As part of this, the al fresco living and dining area is protected from the elements by operable louvres, ensuring these spaces can be enjoyed all year round.

2. Wendy King and Graham Campbell, Landmark Homes North Shore

To maximise living space and deck space on the limited buildable footprint, Landmark created this light-filled home as a series of three linked boxes. An outdoor room with operable louvres extends out from the central kitchen/dining area while giant glass sliders glide away, making the modern indoor and outdoor living spaces one.

3. Lee Turner, Turner Road Architecture

For this long home with spectacular and intimate lake outlooks, louvres keep things cool for al fresco lakeside dining but are slender enough to not rob the interior of the much needed warmth of the winter sun.

4. Regan Johnston, Johnston Architects

This two pavilion home features variety of covered verandas and courtyard spaces to track the sun or avoid the prevailing winds as required. The operable louvres were central to achieving this all-weather, all seasons functionality.

5.  David Reid Homes

The views and outdoor living spaces go on forever in this thoughtfully designed and oriented home by David Reid Homes. Feature batten-look ceilings connect visually with the operable louvres on the deck beyond the kitchen.

6. Daniel Lomma, Daniel Lomma Design

With this home, the great indoor-outdoor connections don't stop at ground level. Upstairs includes an external architectural frame complete with operable louvres, which both defines and shelters the alfresco dining directly below.

7. Emma Johnston, Goom Landscapes

The brief was to fit a spa pool, barbecue, kitchen area and a bar into a rather snug inner-city backyard, with louvre shutters and easy care but bold planting to off-set the hardscaping. The louvre system and heating ensures the space can be used year round.

8. Steeg Banham, Banham Architects

The outdoor rooms on this home also create a feature for the interiors. Large operable louvre pergolas over the courtyard and upper balcony provide precise control over solar gain.
