#1: Consider why you’re renovating

Your motivation for renovating will impact the decisions you make so it’s important to have clarity around it before getting started.

#2: Set (and don’t forget) your budget

A clear, well considered budget should include building and labour costs. However you also need to factor in the tiny details such as robe hooks and toilet roll holders.

Even when you think you’ve accounted for everything, a contingency budget to cover any unexpected surprises will keep you on track.

#3: Look for hidden costs

Hidden costs can creep up on you, so be sure to ask for quotes in detail and work closely with your team to stay in the know.

For example, your demolition may involve the removal of a load bearing wall, which requires a building permit and engineering certification. 

Do some research, be clear with your tradespeople and get a variety of quotes, then double-check the details to avoid friction around charges at a later date.

#4: Choose your tradies wisely

We can’t champion great tradespeople enough. They manage the timing and execution of your dream bathroom, so using a team that communicates well and that understands your vision is vital.

Consider whether you’d like to manage the project yourself or employ a builder or project manager to take charge. 

A builder or project manager will usually source the tradies for you, however if you’re managing the project yourself, you will need to check that your tradespeople are fully licensed.

#5: Plan your timeline

A project timeline gives everybody clarity about exactly what is happening, and when.

Ask when your tradies are available for the job and make sure the right people are there at the right times, with enough time scheduled to finish the job.

Product availability and delivery times can also impact your timeline. Beautiful bespoke items that are made to order, like vanities and benchtops, can take longer than you anticipate but are worth the wait.
