Standing back to assess the available space can make it easier to see how to transform a cluttered room.

Constance Petersen of Petersen Design Associates, LLC, had worked for the owners of this home before, so when they decided to upgrade the master bathroom, they called her. The existing bathroom was spacious, but with a cramped layout, and the space was used inefficiently. Redefining the room created a more spacious, grand master bathroom.

The existing bathroom had a five-foot wide opening off the master bedroom that left little space for the vanities, and allowed you to look straight into the bathroom. The space, occupied by the separate toilet and bidet, was so small it was just about inaccessible.

Petersen moved the entry to the bathroom and replaced a wide opening with a single door, making the bathroom more private and creating space for the vanities. Removing the bidet and changing the toilet's direction made the toilet room more user-friendly. A built-in bath under the windows was replaced with a freestanding tub and moved into a diagonal position in front of the shower enclosure. Vaulted ceilings add to the spacious feeling.
