Forget visions of work gangs fading off into the horizon of a vacant landscape working on a modern-day railroad is all about minimising disruption to everyday life

If there is one word that sums up the running of a modern city it would be logistics. Not a day goes by in any metropolis that doesn't involve a web of myriad machinations designed to keep ordinary life operating smoothly.

That is why, when QR Passenger Pty Ltd (QR) decided its Brunswick Street station needed to be upgraded, it turned to Bovis Lend Lease a company with a nationally proven track record to ensure the project's success, says Bovis Lend Lease general manager Queensland Peter Ward.

"Bovis Lend Lease is one of the world's leading project management, design and construction companies. These skills were brought to bear to ensure that during the scheduled 19 months of works, the more than 50,000 passengers who pass through the station each week would not be inconvenienced."

Proving its reputation is well deserved, the Bovis Lend Lease team completed works in 16 months. This included demolition of the existing platform and concourse facilities, as well as structural modifications to allow new lift, escalator and stair access.

"Continual night shifts, plus 31 24-hour weekends, hour-by-hour programmes and staging by the entire team has ensured the successful completion of this project," says Ward.
