WORKING OUT to a great soundtrack makes the hour spent in the gym much less arduous. But high-energy dance music can only be pumped out at high volume if you have the right audio equipment. Les Mills famously uses this sort of music for its Group Fitness classes.

Having been involved in the revamp of existing sound systems for Les Mills in Wellington's CBD, Sound Services were asked to take care of all the audio equipment at the Hutt City location.

"We used a similar, but larger, formula for the sound in the new complex, but this time we worked from the ground up," says managing director Stuart Clark. "The Cardio Cinema, RPM studio and boxing studio all needed a high-powered system of speakers and subwoofers to cater for the dance style of music Les Mills uses. It's similar to the set-up a nightclub might use."

The Group Fitness studio, women's gym and vertical sun bed rooms all had specific needs in regards to sound. In addition, a distributed background music system was installed, which covers the entire gym.

The whole system had to be easily controlled from one central point. Sound Services designed, supplied and installed a system that fulfils all these requirements.

Turbosound TCS Compact speakers are used in the studios, while the control and processing is done with the PC-controlled Rane RPM multi-processors. The instructors use the Mipro ACT multi-frequency series wireless microphones. The distributed venue system uses Australian Monitor Install series speakers with Turbsound Impact-80 top boxes and TXD215 subwoofers (controlled by another Rane RPM unit) in the Cardio Cinema.

The distributed system is driven by Lab.gruppen C-Series power amplifiers, with a smaller Lab.gruppen for the RPM room speakers. All other areas are powered by Australian Monitor Synergy series amplifiers.
