The early stages of any building project can be nerve-wracking. Once you've decided on the design, fixtures and fitting, and begin to look forward to seeing the completed project, the only unanswered questions are how the builder will perform. Will he turn up on time? Will he do a good job for you?

Garry Shuttleworth, chief executive of the Certified Builders' Association of New Zealand, says the easy answer is to employ a Registered Certified Builder.

To be a member of the Certified Builders' Association of New Zealand, a builder must be a fully qualified and experienced tradesman.

"Apart from kitchens, more design effort probably goes into bathrooms than just about any other part of the house. We believe everyone has the right to know that their builder is properly trained and has the necessary skills and business ethics to do a top job."
