Planning a new home project is not just about the architectural design it's also about the finishing touches. The interior fit-out and the outdoor living areas are equally important.

This new David Reid Homes show home in New Plymouth was designed and built to highlight the complete package, says new home specialist David Furze.

"Every detail has been carefully thought out to show just what can be achieved, starting with the exterior," he says. "The black soffits and architectural detailing give the house a Balinese feel. Using black surfaces paired with wood on the interior reinforces this resort-style look."

At 272m², the show home is large, with two living areas, four bedrooms, two bathrooms and three toilets. Large sliders opening to a covered outdoor living area allow an easy flow between inside and out. There is also a large sliding wall featuring wood panels that can be used to close off the formal and informal living areas.

To add visual interest to the open-plan living space, there are variable ceiling heights. A raised ceiling element above the dining area extends the floor-to-ceiling height to 3.3m, providing an ideal space for a sculptural light fitting.

Several Velux skylights bring extra natural light inside. With double glazing, good insulation and passive solar gain in winter, the house is also highly energy efficient, says Furze.

Other key features include a large scullery that functions as an extension of the kitchen.
