When a leading name in kitchen ventilation holds a design competition that is easy to enter and open to amateurs and professionals, it is an opportunity not to miss.

Last year's winning entry was from interior designer and kitchen designer Jill Jarrett. The brief had been for a well-equipped entertainer's kitchen that combined a rustic appeal with sleek stainless steel, state-of-the-art appliances.

A feature of the space was a limestone wall so the design called for a sculptural hood that would have spectacular visual appeal, yet not obscure the artisan surface behind, says Jarrett.

"This kitchen was two years in the planning so we had plenty of time to get the quality, style and statement exactly right hence the choice of the Trapeze Island hood, part of Zephyr's Cheng collection. This range hood has a delicate suspension structure and light, airy aesthetic.

"As it happens, the wife had chosen many elements, but it was the husband who fell in love with the Trapeze and wanted us to use it.

"The suspension style of the hood also inspired us to include cable lighting, another distinctive feature of this design."
