When the heat is on Protech Design

For construction projects to run smoothly every aspect of the design needs to be in place right from the start including the fire protection design. And being involved from scratch is exactly what Protech Design advocates.

The commercial fire protection consultancy has pioneered an integrated design process that ensures all the active fire protection systems sprinkler systems, fire hydrants, fire alarms and hand-held fire-fighting equipment are designed and detailed before a project is put out to tender.

Director Stuart Hope says this process ensures all issues, including water supply, are resolved before work starts, which speeds up the build and ensures there is no need for last-minute changes.

This process was put in place for the design of the fire protection system for the new Silverdale Centre, developed by Eldamos Investments, the property division of The Warehouse.

"This project is notable for its enhanced safety fire sprinkler system," Hope says. "Each tenancy has an isolation valve at the rear, which means other tenancies are not left unprotected if the system needs to be turned off at any time. This is the first time such a design has been used for a shopping centre of this nature."

Since its inception in 1992, Protech Design has grown its business and now undertakes large-scale fire protection design for commercial clients, including Goodmans, the University of Auckland, The Warehouse, Auckland Airport and Progressive Enterprises.
