For any major commercial project, it's the work that goes on behind the scenes that ensures the architect's vision can be realised. And invariably, this is not straightforward.

Taylor Thomson Whitting was commissioned to refine and complete the structural engineering for both 7 London Circuit and 18 Marcus Clarke. Director Robert Mackellar says one of the most challenging aspects of the London Circuit project was accommodating a large ACT Electricity and Water active sewer line that ran directly beneath the lift shaft.

"The design needed to transfer the loads to avoid the sewer line. Consequently, there are major walls in the basement, with piers either side of the sewer line taking the loads below the sewer, allowing for future excavation if required."

Other major engineering works included the structural design of the cantilevered roof canopy, and the detailing of the facade.

"From a structural point of view, 7 London Circuit is effectively two separate post-tensioned structures with banded slabs," says Mackellar. "But the buildings needed to appear as one, hence the complex engineering of the front facade and the glazed lobby. We also paid considerable attention to hiding the building joints to ensure the aesthetics would not be compromised."

Interior beams span 13.5m, which provides a column-free interior, increasing the net lettable area.

"Considerable work also went into the design of the substations in each building, and the plant room on the roof," Mackellar says. "This has been designed so it can accommodate generators if needed at a future date."

Major structural engineering challenges for 18 Marcus Clarke included the design of self-supporting soil nails, which minimised the need for retaining walls.
